These brown flaxseeds (also known as linseed) are a rich reddish brown colour with a warm and earthy flavour. Flaxseeds are usually ground before consuming to facilitate optimum absorption of the nutrients. They are an excellent source of the omega-3 essential fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and contain the phytoestrogens called lignans. A great source of dietary fibre, magnesium, manganese, potassium, phosphorus, iron, and copper. There is a wealth of research showing the benefits of flaxseeds in the prevention of breast cancer.
A typical serving size of flaxseeds is around 1-2 tablespoons daily. It is best to store the seeds whole and grind them as you require them using a coffee or herb grinder (or mortar & pestle). If you prepare more ground seeds than you need, refrigerate the excess in a sealed container.
